The Slack-First Communications Protocol, out in the open
Published the internal comms framework I built for 24/7 field teams — the one that closes the "shadow text thread" problem so shift handoffs, maintenance issues, and escalations are searchable, triaged, and owned by someone instead of scattered across whoever happened to be in the group chat that week. It's on the portfolio now if you run anything with round-the-clock shifts and recognize the problem.

New credential: Google AI Essentials
Picked up Google's AI Essentials certification through Coursera — the hands-on grounding in applying generative AI to real work that I've been using to build a lot of what shows up in this newsletter. Added it to the Systems & Tools timeline on the portfolio.

Columbus's ridership dipped while the network grew
The city's 2025 Bike Plus Annual Report puts Columbus shared bike and scooter trips at 812,577 for the year — down 17% from 977,000 in 2023, against a citywide target of +5% annually. Meanwhile the city laid 15.9 miles of new or under-construction bike lanes in the same period. More lane-miles didn't move ridership on its own; worth sitting with before assuming infrastructure is the whole answer.

One protected street, zero reported crashes
Also from the Bike Plus report: protecting East Broad Street cut excessive speeding (55+ in a 35) by 89% and total crashes by 50%, with zero reported bike or scooter crashes from May through November. One corridor, one intervention. That's the kind of result that should be showing up in every future project's before/after numbers, not just this one.
